Hi
,

When you’re an entrepreneur, you’re likely a do-it-yourselfer.

You’re the person who wonders why something couldn’t be done a different, better way, and then you make it happen.

The do-it-yourself mentality can drive success, but it also can impede it. When you start a business, you wear many hats – planner, employee, manager, scheduler, bill-payer, invoice-sender, salesperson, and yes, marketer.

All those hats get heavy

You might be able to do all those things – and you might have to for a while – but it’s unlikely you can do them ALL well. That’s why we hire specialists to fill in our knowledge and experience gaps.

While you’re off selling, a bookkeeper or accountant can help you track your numbers. If you’re busy making whatever it is you sell, you need help with sales and marketing.

Think of it like this – there's a reason we call experts. Whether it's the mechanic who magically fixes that weird car noise or the plumber who battles the pipes and wins, specialists come armed with a treasure trove of experience and gadgets to get the job done right (and often better than we could manage on our DIY spree).

So while you’re running your own business, focus on the things you’re especially good at, and hire specialists for the rest.

And when you need an online marketer, well, you know a guy …

New Jargon Thanks to AI

I’m sure the boom in artificial intelligence tools will spawn all sorts of new jargon, but "synthetic content" caught my eye recently.

Not surprisingly, in this usage, "synthetic content" was used to describe text, images, and audio either generated or altered artificial intelligence. (It’s also referred to as "synthetic media.")

Merriam-Webster provides more than a few definitions of "synthetic" as an adjective, but the most relevant are:

  • "of, relating to, or produced by chemical or biochemical synthesis especially : produced artificially"
  • "devised, arranged, or fabricated for special situations to imitate or replace usual realities"

Interesting Synonyms

As synonyms, the dictionary lists "artificial," "nonnatural," and – ironically in this case – "man-made."

As the conversations and debates about artificial intelligence continue, you’ll see the phrases "synthetic content" and "synthetic media" more and more.

And remember that how something is made does not make it good or bad. The more important questions will be about how we use content generated by artificial intelligence.

P.S. - This newsletter was 95 percent created by me, a human. The sixth paragraph was generated by ChatGPT after I asked it to write a "lighter" version of my first draft. This was only bit that seem to fit my style.
